Our Story

I’m Jason, the owner of Kindred Heritage. I make products that I believe will last a lifetime and beyond.  I’ve scoured the internet looking for the items that fill the gaps in my life with no luck, so I started making them myself.  I hope these products can fill the gap in your life as well.

This picture is of me working on one of our book spreaders. They are all hand planed to specifications by me and use no sandpaper in their making!

I’ve been making things for as long as I can remember.  This specific part of the journey began during Covid. When everything was shut down, my wife suffered an injury that changed the course of our lives.  Because of my new need to stay near the house, I started building out my dream shop and collecting new hobbies.  The two that stuck the hardest were woodworking and leatherworking.

Woodworking, specifically, hand tool work, is a very cathartic process.  It’s slow, methodical, and takes a tremendous amount of patience.  Accurate cuts require sharp tools, perfect measurements, and a solid plan. I tend to use tools from eras that have mostly been lost to time, which includes their use and setup, so I’ve had to make a lot of this up as go.  Learning how to restore a hand plane that I found at an antique store was the first step.  Then after learning how to sharpen and set it up for use, I started making a cutting board, which is most woodworkers’ first stop in the craft.  From there I’ve challenged myself to make more and more complex projects.

Keeping myself on my toes, I wanted to add another craft to my arsenal.

Leatherworking is fairly similar to woodworking.  It still needs sharp tools, perfect measurements, and a solid plan, just a different medium.  One of my favorite aspects of leather is that it doesn’t produce dust!

Combining these two hobbies is the premise of Kindred Heritage.  My hope is to capture the needs of my friends and family and create beautiful works of functional art that will last a lifetime and bring them to you.  And when the time comes, pass them along for generations.
